Roosevelt Corollary

The main focus of the cartoon is about the Roosevelt Corollary. The cartoonist’s message on the issue is that Roosevelt is like an umpire who is generally an official who watches a game or match closely to enforce the rules and arbitrate on matters arising from the play. Other’s opinions could be that Roosevelt is being too assertive and shouldn’t get into American Republic affairs.
The cartoonist uses an analogy to compart Roosevelt to an umpire/baseball player. Labeling is also being used as prosperity is written under Roosevelt’s feet which means successful in material terms; or flourishing financially. This supports my opinion on imperialism because I believe the Roosevelt Corollary is supportive to both the United States and the American Republic.  My reason why is if we were to ever get into another war countries like the Puerto Rico could provide troops or supplied to aid in the war effort and vice versa.

Annexation of Hawaii

The issue at hand is dealing with the Annexation of Hawaii. The issue that the cartoonist is conversing about is that the woman on the left is depicted as the “daughter” of Uncle Sam and that she had sent her father a letter saying that everything is going tremendous. Opinions that others may discuss is that although the picture depicts Hawaii as thriving and as paradise some might be able to see behind that mask and recognize that the Hawaiian’s could be upset for being annexed by the United States government and for the overthrown meant of Queen Liliuokalani.
Techniques being used is labeling as the author depicts Hawaii as thriving and having find climate along with peace, prosperity, and loyalty. There’s also some irony hinted because in the back you have the message saying, “Report from Filipines: Send more troops.” You’d think that if the United States was successful in being able to control Hawaii after they annex it you could imagine the same for the Philippines, but obviously not so as after the Spanish-American War the Philippines’s had rebelled. This cartoon doesn’t support my position on American Imperialism because I believe that America didn’t have the right to annex Hawaii without their consent.

Spanish-American War

Spanish-American War is the issue being conversed about in this cartoon. The cartoonist’s message on this cartoon is that President McKinley is a sadistic person as he sets the two dogs free to go and attack another man who from the looked of his hat is Spanish, or from Spain. Others opinion could be that President McKinley had went too far to go into war with Spain and should have let the matter be and let colonies in Spain’s control fight the war on their own.
An analogy is being used as the cartoonist depicts the American army and navy as wild dogs or attack dogs. Another technique being used is labeling as he labels the two dogs one represents the navy and the other as the American army. This cartoon is supportive of my position of American Imperialism because I think it was a positive thing that America had participated in the Spanish-American War but I found it deceiving how America then went to go and control the newly freed colonies.

Roosevelt Corollary

The topic of this cartoon of this cartoon is about the Roosevelt Corollary. The cartoonist’s message is that Roosevelt is “a barrier” separating Mexico and South America which is saying that he’s keeping any nations from intervening and taking the other nation away. Some might say that Roosevelt is going too far with intervening with these countries political issues as the Roosevelt Corollary states that the U.S. might intervene in the affairs of an American republic threatened with seizure or intervention by a European country.
This cartoonist uses exaggeration as a technique by making President Roosevelt appear larger than his typical stature which makes him seem more important and that you’re focus should solely be on him. An analogy is also being used as the president is being described as some sort of “police officer” or “a barrier” that blocks of any intervention of any other countries. The support this cartoon brings to my belief of American Imperialism is that Roosevelt is making a good choice getting in between the politics of other nations because if he hadn’t it could effect the United States in a bad way.

Purchase of Alaska

Purchase of Alaska is the very subject of this political cartoon. The message in this cartoonist is portraying is that the territory America had purchased from Russia was nothing but extra weight to carry and that Alaska was just considered a block of ice. Other’s perseverance could be that Seward had made a good choice in purchasing Alaska as it was a positive for the territory they purchased could be rich in minerals, as it turned out to be.
A technique used was an analogy as they compared Alaska to a block of ice and vice versa. Another technique being used is symbolism as you have Russian America being labeled across the chunk of ice and in the back you could see what I’m assuming is a Russian man/woman carrying away bags of American currency. This cartoon is supportive of my position of American imperialism because my belief is that imperialism is a positive thing as long as both countries are content with being annex or becoming a part of the United States.

Panama Canal

The Panama Canal is the subject of this political cartoon. The cartoonist’s message is that nobody is going to get in the way of President Franklin Roosevelt building the Panama Canal the main reason the Panama Canal was built was for easier transporting of commercial good and other cargo. The second reason the Panama Canal was built was to allow military ships of the United States to have a shorter route between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Others opinions could be that Roosevelt shouldn’t have made a canal or that it was unfair he took advantage of the revolution in Panama to build the canal.
A technique that the cartoonist uses is an analogy as he compares Roosevelt to a construction workers, as he shovels away all the dirt that’s getting in between him building his canal. Another artist technique being used is labeling. In the picture the dirt/ rock chunks are labeled with things like “delay” and “influence” which represents that no matter what nothing will get in Roosevelt’s way of building the canal.
This cartoon is supportive on my belief because I think that the Panama Canal was extremely towards the United States and any other nations using this shortcut. This was a great form of easy transportation for commercial good and other cargo. Also, the Panama Canal was beneficial because it allowed military ships of the United States to have a shorter route between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

Open Door Policy

This political cartoon is about the Open Door Policy. The cartoonist’s message on the issue is that China isn’t very fond of the idea of America coming into China. I assume this because you can see Uncle Sam at the doors of China and poking out of the door are a various amount of cannons and maybe swords. Some opinions that other people could have is that Uncle Sam is trying to get into China by sneaking in through the small hole on the very bottom, besides the myriad amount of weapons being pointed at him.
Some techniques used in the cartoon are symbolism. Symbolism is a great example because of all the weaponry pointed at Uncle Sam represents how the Chinese didn’t appreciate how American’s were disrespecting the Chinese culture. Another technique used in this cartoon is exaggeration because of the vast amount of weapons pointed at Uncle Sam.
This political cartoon supports my position of American Imperialism. This cartoon supports my beliefs on American Imperialism because I agree with China and think that it’s impolite for America to be disrespecting their traditions and way of life when China so generously opened its doors to trade. The Open Door policy states that, the statement of principles initiated by the States in 1899 and 1900 for the protection of equal privileges among countries trading with China and in support of Chinese territorial and administrative integrity. Which these different nations aren’t following very adequately.
